Major international event for policy makers, medics, people with Down Syndrome and their families
Nominations sought from across Ireland for participants in the first parliamentary style “International Synod Of People with Down Syndrome” to take place during the Congress
Tuesday 19th August 2008: Down Syndrome Ireland today announced that Ireland has been chosen to host the prestigious “10th World Down Syndrome Congress” in August 2009. The event will run across four days from the 19th to the 22nd of August next year and is expected to attract over 2,000 delegates from across the globe. The theme of the Congress is “Lifelong Living and Learning” and it will take place in the Helix and DCU, with a State Reception to be held at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. For the first time in its history, the Congress will run an International Synod of people with Down syndrome. This event will give adults and young people with Down syndrome an opportunity to meet their peers from across the globe and to discuss issues that affect their daily lives, including employment and living in the community. The format will be parliamentary style and the Synod will be afforded appropriate recognition by political representatives in Ireland. Down Syndrome Ireland today asked communities across the country to nominate 150 adults (17 years old upwards) with Down syndrome to take part in the Ambassador Programme; the training programme that will help prepare them for their role and duties during the Congress. Speaking about the event, Mr. Pat Clarke, Chairperson of the World Down Syndrome Congress said: “Ireland has an extremely positive reputation internationally; we are seen as leaders, not followers, when it comes to issues such as mainstream education for children with Down syndrome and independent living, so this event will give us a chance to share our experiences, while learning about the latest research and international best practice in health, education and social research”. He continued: “ The International Synod of People with Down syndrome is a particularly exciting event, as it is the first time anything like this has been done…we are hoping families and communities around the country will nominate adults with Down syndrome of all abilities to take part and be an integral part of the Congress”. Mr Fergus Finlay, Chief Executive of Barnardos, who spoke at the announcement today said: “ The barriers to independence are still too high for many people with Down syndrome… this Congress will give us the opportunity to listen and learn from best practice across the globe, helping us deliver sustainable change in the lives of young adults with Down syndrome on issues that really matter, from living in the community to fair employment opportunities”.
